Kitchen Mixing Materials & Finishes

It’s a new decade and there is a new design direction for kitchens. In 2020, you’ll find that all-white kitchens are a thing of the past. Mixing materials and finishes is the next big kitchen trend. It creates a layered, more personal look. As Matthew Quinn, an infamous kitchen designer, correctly predicted, “kitchens will become more like rooms. There will be integration between function and aesthetics.” [Read more about Matthew Quinn’s perspective on kitchen design in this previous blog post.]

Mixing Materials and Finishes

Below are a few of my favorite “mixed materials and finishes” kitchens:

This custom island is gilded in gold in Jamie Drake’s apartment. A pop of fuchsia on the barstools adds color to the space. The pendants suspended over the island have silver accents. The length of the marble waterfall bar top is impressive and perfect for entertaining.

This kitchen fully embraces copper, using it as a backsplash and on the hood over the range. The cool grey marble contrasts the copper’s warmth and darker cabinets give it a sophisticated feel.

Green marble and gold accents intertwine to create an effortlessly layered look. I saw green marble at this year’s Kips Bay Show House in New York City. Could it be making a come back too? The finish of the ceiling cove mimics its hue.

Dark and moody, this kitchen radiates “chic”.

An instant classic from the master Jean Louis Deniot. He loves to mix metals in his interiors, which ups the glam factor. Note the hammered silver hood. Fitting for the middle eastern princess’ Paris apartment.

I love everything about this modern kitchen designed by interior designer Michelle Gerson . Dark wood bottom cabinetry breaks up the white. A polished nickel border on the hood contrasts the black iron barstool bases. Kitchen Trend Alert: Mixing Materials and Finishes is here to stay. A mix of veining on the backsplash slab versus solid countertop adds visual interest.

The kitchen trend of mixing materials and finishes is here to stay!

The dark tones with the warm. Metals are so inviting. Delicious!
