Duncan Phyfe at the Met

Back in December an exhibit opened at the Metropolitan Museum about cabinetmaker Duncan Phyfe, whose furniture was very trendy in the 1920′s. He emigrated from Scotland when he was only 16 years old and trained as a cabinetmaker while living in Albany, New York before relocating to New York City. He became popularized for selling his work at low prices.

According to the Met,  Phyfe’s work was in such demand that he was referred to as the “United States Rage.” His best known furniture was similar to the work of Thomas Sheraton, who created English Regency pieces.  Looking at Phyfe’s beautiful handiwork, you can see why he is considered to be one of the leading furniture makers of his time.

I think these pieces are beautiful, and I hope I can get up to see the exhibit before it closes.

The commercial project also required some offices to be updated.

I also changed the floor plans in these spaces which helped to open them up.

Valentine’s Day

by laura on February 14, 2012

This Valentine’s day I thought it would be fun to highlight some  red or pink furniture. Can’t think of much else that would grab your attention like a bright red piece of furniture or appliance in a home. A pink icebox is unexpected and a red glossy cabinet is so sharp!

In the June 2009 issue of Elle Decor, Margaret Russell used the phrase “ruthlessly edit” when it comes to cleaning out. That has stuck with me ever since and as you know, I am going at it strong. I have gathered up some of my favorite inspirational images which all fall into organization category on my Pinterest site. Sometimes it can be a simple idea, a big idea, a whole concept or just a trick – no matter what it is, I hope these images help you to get your closet/dresser/bedroom/whole home organized in 2012, as they are helping me. I am keeping what I use and love, and if I don’t it get’s donated.

Fave Fabric Sources

by laura on January 31, 2012

One of my favorite parts of my job is looking at fabrics and wallpapers and creating schemes for my clients. There are so many fabric houses that I love but today I thought I would share my very favorites. Zoffany is a British textiles company that I have used for years for their classic and sophisticated designs.

a little greenery

by laura on January 26, 2012

One of my favorite ways to accessorize a room is by adding plants and flowers. I especially like bringing greenery inside at this time of year to add life and warmth during these colder months. I was thrilled to see the below photograph grace the cover of the December/January issue of House Beautiful. Mark Sikes and Michael Giffin’s placement of the tree in the living is perfect and simultaneously genius. I now can’t imagine this room without it!

Large scale plants add great impact to interior spaces and bring color upwards.

tree 2 a little greenery

When I grew up my mom had a Ficus tree in our house which I always thought was so neat.

large plant a little greenery

These pretty blooms lend an organic feel to this library, and I like to use large scale branches.

We also had large beautiful forsythia bushes, which I remember my mom frequently using in her arrangements.

I always think it is interesting to see plants and flowers in interior spaces.

I love how they are used below at different heights and spots in the room.

like them too??

Easy DIY Redo’s

by laura on January 24, 2012

I love to tackle interior DIY projects, but I don’t usually have the time that they require so I look to a few of my favorite blogs to read about inventive re-do’s. One of my regular reads is Little Green Notebook.  Jenny provides great descriptions and how-to’s for all of her DIY projects – and I can say that they all turn out beautifully.  A favorite is this super easy Ikea Lack table update

Desktop44 Easy DIY Redos

Eddie Ross is a master at DIY projects and crafts.

I love how he reinvented this metal bench he found at an antique shop for a piece he did for Ralph Lauren & Bloomingdales.

Lindsay & Aubrey updated a simple piece of Ikea furniture into this fabulous bedside table/dresser. (project here)

Another fun dresser update by Kate at Centsational Girl – what a great color! (project here)

Desktop39 Easy DIY Redos

Adding a mirror to the top of a side table is an easy update that Abbe did and it gave her bedside table a whole new look.

Desktop40 Easy DIY Redos Sanity Fair updated an inexpensive lucite tray by adding animal print underneath it, what a fun and easy update.

And stenciling a plain rug like Nate Berkus gives it that extra stylish touch. (project here)

A great update of bedroom furniture By Glamouri here.

Back in Spring 2009, I transformed some bamboo chairs and a bookshelf into a table for a client.

Another easy and smart project by Jenny at Little Green Notebook is creating your own lacquer look boxes.
