Part 1. Dual Purpose Rooms

by Laura Casey Interiors on August 22, 2011

A few weeks ago I was approached by a client who wanted to turn a room into a dual purpose room. What exactly do I mean by that?… The client wanted to design a room that would serve as a playroom day to day for her children, but also a guest room when visitors were in town. Great idea right?! It got me thinking about rooms that serve as a dual purpose or shared space for the home owners. Take a look at some good examples…

Here is a small cottage that uses one room as the kitchen, dining and living room.

Here is another shared space that has an open concept between the living and dining spaces.

In my follow up post, I will be showing you how I turned a clients room into a dual purpose space……

I can’t wait to see what you do for the client! There must be some great strategies so when the guest opens the closet the toys don’t come tumbling out!

How timely! I have been trying to figure out where to create a better place to work at home and am contemplating an office/guest room set-up! Thanks for the inspiration!!!! Looks lovely! – Becky

Can’t wait to see your transformation. I recently turned our play room into a dual purpose playroom/guestroom. I’m going to assume you had a much more clever solution than shoving toys in every nook and cranny:) I did get rid of 4 trash bags of stuff.

You always have such great inspiration photos. I just linked to your bookshelf styling post today in my blog. It was a huge inspiration in helping me tackle my floor to ceiling shelves!

In my “next” house I will have one room and it will serve many purposes!
A studio with a small kitchen and a large table for sharing food and paint.
What more would I want. dual purpose rooms are exciting and show life at it’s fullest.

Beautiful rooms. Great concepts. I am inspired to “pretty up” my own living spaces. Can’t wait to see your solution to the unique challenge!

That is what we have going and are taking to the next level! Turning the “bonus room” into a combined play room and guest room! Half of it is all play and the other half a comfortable seating area with a sofa bed – which the kids also love using as their reading nook. I use a lot of art in that room. And not just kids art! Kids should be exposed to all kinds of art from an early age, I believe.

The overall room needs a little bif of a makeover but the room is so light, large and inviting.

I can’t wait to see what you do with yours!

The painted bookshelves we talked about are behind that orange chair in the “My Home” section, right hand column on my blog. Not as fancy as yours – but equestrian gray!

I could use a room like that too. Our playroom has a queen bed in it, and it is mostly used as a trampoline. Can’t wait to see what you do!

Looking forward to this. I need some ideas re my guest room / office. I am tired of moving my drawing board into the closet when we expect visitors.
