art in groupings

by laura on September 7, 2010

I have been looking lately at different ideas and ways to hang art. Groupings, interesting compositions and arrangements can add so much to a room. The black frames below are nicely sized and compliment the black within the watercolors by Wilson Shieh.

Prints sometimes look randomly dispersed, but I am sure a lot of thought went into this grouping.

The “eyes” are looking at some prints by Cy Twombly, Ed Ruscha, and Sherrie Levine. I like the mix of frames above the table.

What a dramatic black and white look, a modern composition of Italian Renaissance statues.

I love how Windsor Smith delicately arranged prints on her mantle and incorporated the mirrored sconces.

The two larger works are balanced by the smaller pieces in the middle. It’s a great mix and works well together.

What fun to bring the colors to a kids room.

Sarah over at Style Chronicle wrote a great post with a good DIY idea for framing.

Do you like a grouping, large art alone or a mix?

great post, Laura. You used some images I had not seen before. I especially like the vintage and more random feel of the grouping in the second photo. Enjoyed that one! Donna

I love these arrangements. And especially the dark frames. Lovely post!

I loved Windsor Smith’s mantle ! Groupings are difficult to make, and you’ve showcased some really interesting ones. I did a post on Saturday on large art that you might want to check out…..totally opposite from the grouping. Love them both.

I love the way groups take on a sort of “familial” presence when gathered. It reminds me of family reunions. I love frames that match or match.
Fantastic images.

I love the second image, the eclectic use of frames is what I am going for…I have them all purchased now I just need to actually put them up on the wall.

My favorite is the mantle done by Windsor Smith. I like the way they look like they were displayed casually and yet you know it was a very strategic plan. Kathysue

Dear Laura, good to be back here! ( I have been painfully blog lazy this summer).

I like it all! Individually hung, groupings , mixed, small and big, old and new. But you are right it takes more thought than many of us realize to” hang a collection right”.

Raining and gray in Seattle today. Summer is officially over here.

Love to you, Mon

Awesome! As an artist I’m always looking for ways to squeeze more paintings in there, in a design wise way. Great post!!

Photo #2 is my fav– Salon style is so flexible and so interesting to look at — I love it! It has such a retro, Parisian feel to it. I have mini ‘galleries’ in my foyer, bedroom and living room, and yesterday created a new ‘family gallery’ in my hallway. So much fun to play with the subject matter. I have a bird theme in my foyer of small, originals I purchased from Etsy. Wonderful post!

I think this is one of the hardest things to do well. I’m always challenged with making it look orderly but also interesting. Great images as inspiration.

Love the symmetry of the grouping over the mantle. Ive been playing with groupings in my house lately, which means lots of extra holes in the wall!

Have a great week!

Love the groupings. Just moved into a new house and the walls are empty. Blank canvas and i will definitly do the grouping this time.

I agree with Gwen that this is so hard to do well. Oh, but when it’s right it can be so wonderful, like the second picture here. Definitely my favorite. I have to add that my least favorite part of design is hanging art. We bring in help for the difficult installations.

I’m about to do a project like this in my hallway with a grouping of old family photos in a mix of antique frames – this post is a great inspiration for me….thank you!

PS – Laura, I’ve been reading your blog for some time and just recently started my own…come visit sometime! xxoo

I love a mix. I have groupings in some areas…then some stand alones. It just depends on the space and the art. But, after having seen these images…I think I need more groupings!

These are great. There truly are so many different ways to layer/stack art! We enjoyed the images!
