Antiques, gorgeous wallpapers, vintage fabrics, historic colors, silver picture frames- I love them all. What do I also love? Modern Architecture. I am not going to discuss bare white interiors, but for those of you who aren’t convinced, I am going to try to sway you to start to look at the exteriors in a new way.
Free of ornament one truly enjoys seeing the structure for the shape, understanding the function and respecting the materials. The beauty of a house like this truly is in the architecture, the contrasting elements of the surface and windows, and understanding the footprint. Possibly the bigger windows are for hallways and public spaces, and the smaller windows are representative of private spaces (bedrooms and bathrooms). The connection with nature is outstanding, you can enjoy the landscape as it was intended.
When I was in design school I first saw the Douglas House(completed 1973), which is on Lake Michigan by Richard Meier and have never forgotten it. Nestled in the tress, I think it is amazing.
It is hard for me to judge what living inside a modern house would be like when I have never have. Mine wouldn’t be white and black dressed with steel framed furniture, there would be color, but it would defer in design with respect to the architecture.
Modernists see beauty in a different way. Who says I can’t love it all?
Maybe I am a modern girl with an old soul.
Are you swayed, don’t like it or were you with me already?

I am totally with you on this. Love modern architecture and when they build it “green” it’s even better. Great phototgraphy as well as great homes.
I was with you already. I love the tension of more traditional furniture in a modern home. Hard to find in Charlotte but would love to give it a try!
Salude- to the best of the best- Mr. Charles Gwathmey- a real pioneer in the modernist movement. Rest in peace-You are missed.
Gorgeous architecture. I can truly appreciate the lines and form in modern buildings and I am stunned at the creativity of some architects, they have such vision. I am an old soul give me a cottage and I am happy but I can appreciate all forms of good architecture and these are all wonderful examples of Great Architecture,Kathysue
I am with you!
Love it all. And have great respect for excellent design regardless of its persuasion.
I love modern in a rural setting. I love country in the city. The juxtaposition is what appeals to me. see joebmoore site – modern arch. you will love.

Swayed a bit by this….the last one especially! Live right near New Canaan, CT, home of some of the best modernists. Plan on viewing Philip Johnson’s Glass House this summer.
I am so with you on this one, Laura. We have some amazing architects in Texas who do great contemporary design. My hope for my next house is contemporary nestled in the trees overlooking the hill country. I would furnish with a mix of antique and modern, and of course, some color! Great post!!
As you already know, I require no swaying! Beautiful pics!
Stunning houses! I’ve just found your wonderful blog. Please, keep going.
Very nice post.
I am so with you! I LOVE modern architecture. There is a great modern house near my in-laws in NJ that I have been dying to peek inside. I just can’t imagine building a modern house in Charlotte, at least not where we live now.
Love them, love the image with the fog, a modern day Pride and Predjudice appeal. I could go for these.
Hi Laura, don’t need to convince me – I am a fan! But even a bigger fan of mixing the 2 styles!
Hope all is well with lovely you!

You don’t have to convince me! I like this, not my personal style but I like anything well done…….I think it is the openness to the surrounding environments and the glass that appeals to me…..Maryanne
