interior shutters

by Laura Casey Interiors on May 18, 2010

When I did a post a few weeks ago on interior ropes, at the same time I was thinking about interior shutters. There are some rooms in which shutters are very fitting.

They can be pretty and functional at the same time. I love that the shutters below are the main color in the room.

Look closely, these French shutters were installed on a track so that they can move like curtains.

Even though these are exterior shutters, there is not a need for interior treatments.

The loveseat below once belonged to Tony Duquette.

Antique French shutters have now become closet doors, what a smart idea!

A pair of doors with shutters on the upper portion give the same great feel.

Interior shutters keep a room light and feeling like summer is right around the corner.

I love the look of them over the bathtub.

What do you think? Do you have any shutters in your house?

I have wood shutters throughout my house – similar to the 1st image. They are painted the same colour as the trim and are kept closed (unlike the first image) with just the louvres opening and closing. They are great for privacy which we need here in the burbs where houses are quite close together.

I have wood shutters on every window in my house…helps that my dad owns a plantation shutter company! They are custom made at his shop in Houston…the website is a work in progress, but you can check it out: http://www.designshutters.com. My brother is uploading photos of clients’ homes soon. They are custom made to fit any window or door in your home and can be painted or stained any color of your choosing. They are the best!

I used some old wooden shutters inside on a wall as a decorative frame for a very large bird
cage. I painted them a depression era green. I have had them for years and still love the charming look they give that one wall in my familyroom. You can see it at the end of this post if you would like to see what I am talking about:

Those are great examples, Laura. When well executed with fine quality shutters, they make a room so inviting! Great post!!

I’m in love with shutters. I used them in several rooms of my house. We did a pair on a sliding track similar to the photo here by Eleanor Cummings between the kitchen and back hall area. They are a real conversation piece. Great post. Saw some new pics.

The only interior shutters I’ve ever had where cheap plastic ones nailed to the wall in my college apartment and used to hold pictures and cards. All of the above pictures look sooooo much better than mine did!

I absolutely love that first picture (well, all of them, really) of the sunny dressing room! And I love the whole look and feel of the room with the shuttered closet doors and gorgeous wallpaper.

Ah! I meant to type “were” instead of “where” in that first sentence!

We have five large sets of white shutters in our dining room. They go beautifully with our orange walls and gorgeous blue ceiling. Thanks for the other ideas!

Do wooden blinds count?

I have a fine collection of photos of shutters from Europe that I love to just look at.
This makes me miss my NY Apartment. We had them everywhere, even in the shower.

Gorgeous post Laura. I love adding old shutters to rooms. I actually just purchased four sets of beautiful pine shutters. I’m storing them until the right project comes my way.

I will never say anything bad about shutters again! What an amazing post, Laura! Most pics (if not all!) will end up in my inspiration file!

I love this post! I’ve had a photo of weathered interior shutters for my front sitting room for YEARS but have never gotten around to doing anything about it. Maybe this summer when I take time off from my papergoods!

Thanks for the inspiration!

No shutters here, but I do love the look. I think if I ever get a beach or lake house these would be perfect

I love plantation shutters! It’s just such a versatile treatment …

I remember that when I moved to Atlanta, plantation shutters were all the rage. I decided to do curtains instead, and I still love my curtains, all these years later…and many people are taking out their plantation shutters.

The house in the second picture belongs to an acquaintance in Atlanta. She invited me over to see it, then had a flood (caused by a faucet I think), so things got crazy. I need to follow up with her again as I would love to see how she makes her interior shutters work!
