cane + wicker

by Laura Casey Interiors on March 29, 2010

Rattan furniture has been popular in the United States for a few hundred years and dates back to 2000 B.C. when it was used to weave chests and chairs in Egypt. Rattan encompasses hundreds of types of palms, cane furniture is made from the outer layer of a palm and wicker is made from the inner core. Cane chairs are high on my list as they are comfortable to the back, sturdy and look smart.

I love the form of these cane chairs from the Madeline Stuart Collection.

Even in a more transitional setting a cane sofa looks great.

Martha Stewart makes a nice cane slipper chair for Bernhardt and I love the second one from Ralph Lauren.

Wicker is very easy to paint and stain and therefore can become versatile. It is also relatively inexpensive and readily available.

Wicker is also great outdoors because it is very durable.

That covered porch looks just like my kind of spot. Nice light fixture too.

Have an affinity for cane furniture since I grew up with it living in the tropics and it’s how we started our furniture business.
On another note, I may not end up going to the Bunny Williams event since we are trying to schedule a photo shoot around that time. Have fun and will have to look out for it on your blog! Enjoy Spring Break with the family.

I absolutely adore cane and wicker. The mister? Not so much. It’s a battle, but I fight hard to get wicker on the front porch and cane in the living room. Great post Laura, hope you are well!

In my house I have cane chairs and wicker chairs! I love it!
In our company we wove the cane back and seats of some chairs still in our own working place!

Love this post, Laura. I have a cane sofa that was my grandmother’s. I have slip covered the cushions many times and just love it. Beautiful images.

When I think of wicker, it usually calls to mind images of Blanche Devereaux’s Miami living room. This stuff is beautiful though!

I have many pieces of wicker furniture, they are very versatile, kid-friendly, and still look good after they are somewhat distressed.

I like using cane pieces in my design. They bring warmth and texture to a room.
It’s interesting how cane can be used in such diverse styles of decor.
Great post.

I’m a big cane enthusiast too! Laura, the RL chair may be my fave but you put together such a great range here.

I love all these ideas and have been trolling for wicker for my porch! Thanks for the kind words too!

We totally agree — over-stuffed furniture is out. Enter cane and wicker! And ditto to what Traci Zeller says — we noticed that too! You might like a post we wrote about the new trends in upholstery and the like; check it out! http://bit.ly/b7xn7K

Laura dear, I always learn something new from you! No rattan furniture in my house. And I think I can only take them in small doses. But I got to say that those painted ones look pretty handsome. And the table in the living room with all the art on the walls looks fantastic! Maybe I need to bring just one little piece into my house…. And I am thinking a table…

Happy week to you, friend!

I love cane and wicker so much that I love even just the title of this post! Though I do try not to go overboard. Not guaranteeing I succeed, but I do try…
