Past & Present: Tarlow’s Octagonal Table

by laura on November 30, 2009

Rose Tarlow found this beautiful set of eight chairs and octagonal table in Kew Gardens, England . She says in her book The Private House (published in 2001) “This table is a puzzle that fits together perfectly”. It is one of the most rare and fascinating pieces of furniture I have ever discovered”.

When I saw this table and chairs designed by Ann Getty in the December 2009 issue of Vogue featuring Alexis and Trevor Trania’s home, I immediately thought of Tarlow’s table above. Could Ann Getty have been inspired by it?

Inspiration, there’s always a source.

What a great post! I often muse on the sources of inspiration, particularly in architecture. There really isn’t very much that is new, is there? It makes the new and different that much more interesting.

Wow, great eye Laura! I love the octagon table, but I must admit I would need to do small chairs that aren’t quite so dramatic.

I might think so. Great table. What a conversation piece.

I absolutely loved Rose’s book and even sent her a letter to say as much. It’s probably the first design book I’ve actually read from cover to cover. Ann Getty most definitely got her inspiration from the English table and chairs. Beautiful piece of furniture.
