Wonderful post. I just read ‘The Private House’ by Rose Tarlow, and she recounts how she had finished a room (in her own home), and it was not quite right. Something else needed to be done. She pulled in an evening purse with a leopard print, stuffed it, and lay it on the table – and suddenly, the room felt finished. Have you read this book? It is wonderful – mainly text, and so interesting.

The last image inspires such calm feelings and it is full of harmonious “choices”. I have to say that all images in your blog are very carefully selected (chosen) and truly elegant.

So true and in today’s world we are lucky to have so many choices. I am in the midst of having to make big choices but I have to keep the details in mind so that all of my choices, big and small, will work together. I am tired just thinking about it all! Great post!

That Suzanne Kasler room is just stunning! You are so right – each piece in these photos are so well thought out as to how they create atmosphere, play off each other, and contribute to the overall feel. Just beautiful!

I especially love the grey one oh and the bathroom is lovely too.
It sure does help to have skilled advice with many design choices – before a designer helped us, I knew I didn’t care for our black granite KI countertops, nor the fireplace surround that had some greens in it . . . but I also knew I didn’t want to go through the expense of changing those. In my mind, I never gave a thought to the possibility of their being any relationship b/w the black counter and green fireplace that was a good 20 feet away. I presumed they were immovable choices that someone else had made prior to me and that the designer would have to work around and downplay those things kind of being “in the way”.
To my surprise and amazement, with the use of fabrics, texture, and wallpaper she was able to tie those two elements to each other and into the rest of the plan. Instead of trying to hide what they were, she subtlety brought them into the overall plan. And now I see the undertones of green in the KI counter. That was amazing to me! Until I saw it, I didn’t know that was what she was doing! I still look at it often and marvel. I even like the counters alot more!
Designers are expensive – and totally worth it, when you work with a good one (like Laura!)!!

Just yesterday, the window washers came, and it always amazes me how clear a small “choice” can bring about a clear vision. I always tell my children that “Life is all about choice.” Especially when they ask my opinion on tatoos and piercings which seem to be the norm. I simply reply, “Live is all about choice.”
