Lanterns

by laura on September 17, 2009

Lanterns are one of my favorite light fixtures to use in a house because they are pretty but not distracting. The most important part of a lamp is function. Over work stations and indoor and outdoor tables are good places for lanterns because they give off a strong amount of light and are not hindered by a shade.

Tobi Fairley adds a strong design element to this kitchen by using this updated lantern over the island.

In entry halls and stairwells they can be beautifiul and functional at the same time.

I love how Christopher Maya chose this one above a beautiful floor.

What a great choice for a double height ceiling.

Remember when I found this one for a steal at South End Consignment? Shortly after I posted it  a reader went and bought it.

They fall into the “less is more” category, which I am certainly drawn too.

She’s back!
I missed your posts!
I like all of these–the second to last is esp. intriguing…have never seen such a thing. But I like it!
Welcome back, Laura.

I love, love, love lanterns. One of my big ‘break through’ posts as a new blogger was on lanterns, and it was picked up and featured by Apartment Therapy. In my next house, I plan on having lots of lanterns on the exterior and interior!

The triple hung lanterns in the double height ceiling works so well. Great way to deal with that amount of space.

You know I never gave lanterns a second look before, but now I’m really starting to enjoy them. They add such a great touch to a room. I’m now searching my little home and seeing where I can place one!

I need a lantern for my entry hall! So simple, clean and classic.

My favorite is the fifth picture down of the entry hall lantern. It’s so clean and simple and is also the right length for the space…thanks for the great pictures!
