The Carriage House

by laura on August 26, 2009

I always love seeing a carriage house to remind me of a slower time of life.

When I was little the house that we lived in had a carriage house and my mom’s art studio was there. This is a restored stable and carriage house by architect Paul Shurtleff, AIA. These large double sliding doors are great looking.

The old doors are really beautiful and I bet they are heavy.

La Dolce Vita featured David Jiminez’s pretty carriage house behind his home in Kansas City.

Picture 3

The city of Santa Rosa, CA has a beautiful carriage house in the park in the center of the city.

Picture 4

Doesn’t this make you want to take a ride in one of these?

Julia at Hooked on Houses is hooked on things that are vintage too. Hop over and check it out.

One of my favorite spots in NY is the “Colonial Dames” home and learning about the carriage house where the horses were stabled. I love the history of carriage homes, and now they do seem to be coveted studios or offices or even apartments. Caretaker cottages also seem to be quite sought after. Another wonderful post Laura.

It is so wonderful to see such care put into keeping a part of our history! Those carriage are beautiful. I think it would be wonderful to live in a converted barn. All that space and open room.

My dream home has a carriage house, which is a fancy way to say a detached garage with a guest suite or office over the garage. I love carriage houses because they are not attached to the home – and therefore do not block any of the light going into the kitchen or the home.

I love great design in small buildings. I like the idea of living in a complex of small structures. In the south we don’t have to worry about crushing cold weather while going from one to the other.

Laura – remember the horse and buggy in Central Park! Riding in a horse drawn carriage is so unique. Let’s add some huge sleigh bells and snow! I have six foot sleigh bells on both sides of my front door – inside my carriage house! Maryruth

I have a special affinity for carriage houses. The art studio of the college I went to was an old carriage house ~ thanks for bringing back that very good memory!
