Summer Reading

by laura on May 21, 2009

I have by no means started my summer reading with a short and delightful piece of Chick Lit. It is fiction, yet very historically accurate and set at Salisbury Cathedral built around 1220 in Salisbury, England.

Have you read it?

This will provide me with some opportunities to look at Gothic Architecture and it’s influences on previous and current design and the Gothic Revival Period in the United States. The house below is an example of Carpenter Gothic Architecture. It was built in 1854 by Seth Shaw in Ferndale, CA.

In the meantime, enjoy the long weekend. I’ll be reading.

I remember reading Pillars of the Earth in the late 90s, and it immediately became my favorite book of all time (although, it takes about 175 pages to get into). I read the sequel this spring and found it to be excellent as well.

I have always had a love of Gothic architecture and design…the quatrefoil is my favorite shape!

I gave this book to my Dad for Christmas one year. I think I need to steal it back. Thanks for the rec. I plan to be poolside as much as possible this summer!

One of my favorite books EVER. Read it years ago between high school and college. Loved it. Want to read the sequel.
Also loved learning about this period of architecture in school years ago. I still recall doing a report — 6th grade!– on Gothic architecture…and then loving it again studying it in college.
Enjoy! :-)

I’ve heard such good things about this book; I like the images you’ve gathered that were inspired by Pillars of the Earth- great post! Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

It is on my “to read” list. Several of my friends raved about it. I am just finishing The Shack. The first bit is a bit unsettling but it sets up the rest of the book. Very thought provoking!

I just finished this book today and sat down at the computer to refresh my tired brain on the actual facts. Good book and an accomplishment to have finished it!

I did read this and loved it- it felt like an accomplishment to finish it. I also love your blog. I’ve been reading it all morning! You are very inspiring and I loved what you did with the 2 girls bedrooms.
