My eye is often drawn to the unexpected, to things that are a little different and not the obvious choice. Red doors fall into just that category, and I think they look great. I love the architecture on the house below, do you believe that it is in Nashville? That makes me like it even more because of the unexpected setting. Hugh Newell Jacobson is the brilliant architect behind this project. I think that the red door completes the facade.

He must like red doors too as he put one on the interior of the door at a home he designed in Massachusetts.

All over the world red doors seem to be a choice. In Portugal…

in New Mexico

At the Chinese Summer Palace.

or in New England.

Even on the interior this is so smart looking.

or for sliding closet doors.

Now if I can just find one in Charlotte…are you a fan?

I love red doors! I don’t think a red door would work on our house now (maybe you can convince me otherwise…) otherwise I’d have one!
I LOVE this post! Hugh Newell Jacobson is one of my absolute favorites – I was just showing his book to an architect friend the other day. If that house is in Nashville, is it one I could drive by next time I am there? It is stunning! Love all the red doors, but the one in New Mexico is particularly unique.
I too LOVE red doors! I can’t help but think of Talbot’s- their doors are a beautiful shade of red!!
Love the Hugh Newell Jacobson house!!!! I wonder what the inside looks like!
Yes I love red doors too! We had a red door on our very first house. It was a little Cape Cod style house in medium gray with white trim, black shutters and a bright red door. We loved it!

I never thought that red doors could be that beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Actually, you can see the house. I have lived in Nashville for two years and was excited to see the house after reading about it in several magazines. It is at the end of a long driveway, but you can still see it. The only problem is that it is a busy road (Harding Place) and it is hard to slow down enough to get a really good look.
Laura, I’m a huge fan of red doors too!
When I was about to have my house painted, my neighbor’s nanny (who is Asian) told me that in some Asian cultures, there is great significance tied to the color of the door. I remember that black doors were not good – but it makes me wonder what red doors mean!
I am not a fan of red, but I do like seeing a red door. When I was a child, we would visit our grandparents and I vividly remember a small church in the neighborhood that had a beautiful red door.
Do you like red doors or red doors on white backgrounds, hmm???
