I have mentioned the Kips Bay Showhouse in my recent posts. The room I have been eager to see a photo of is Gloria Vanderbilt’s bedroom. She collaborated with interior designer Matthew Smyth on the project. It was his idea to ask her to do a room, and it is based on her teenage bedroom when she lived with her aunt, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, in the 1940′s. Vanderbilt said, “I fell in love with the room and forever after tried to recapture it…” This room is very authentic as she remained true to who she is, what she envisioned and the feelings she wanted to recreate.

Her aunt, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney.

I love that at 85 years old she is pursuing her creative outlets.

When I heard Charlotte Moss speak she quoted Lesley Blanch saying she wanted to “Recapture the Rapture” with her interiors.
What a beautiful quote. I think Gloria Vanderbilt did just that.

Ms. Vanderbilt’s room is an incredible example of how interior design can have a profound experience on one’s life. I have so many memories connected to my childhood room as well. Of course it wasn’t as gorgeous as this one!
Have a wonderful weekend, Laura.

What a lovely reminder of Gloria Vanderbilt. I especially love the writing on the wall. Thanks for your visit to hill country house and yes, we always have to go to Pancake Pantry! I love visiting here! if you don’t mind my asking, why are you coming back in the fall?
What an inspiring post; I love the vignet with the mirror. Thanks for sharing and see you soon!
My room had the loveliest shade of green shag carpeting, and the windowed wall was papered in the most cheery of large flowers and ferns. The other walls were painted with a pale lime green. I wish I had a photo somewhere.
I still remember the smell of the carpet….and I had lots of grosgrain, papagallo, and bright happy things!

Exquisite interiors! Can you tell me if the wall covering in the top photo wallpaper or a painting technique?
