William Morris originally printed the Trellis style wallpaper in 1864 in England. It was supposedly inspired by a trellis in his garden at Red House in Kent, England. An entire post will be dedicated to William Morris at a later point, as he in considered to be the founder of the Arts and Crafts movement in England and the United States.His motto was “Have nothing in your house which you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”.

Many attribute the early use of the trellis inside to Elise de Wolfe (see earlier post) at the Colony Club in 1905.
How the Trellis pattern has become quite contemporary and updated. It is very popular these days. This is how great it looks in a front hallway in one of my NYC client’s summer home in Long Island. I love the green and there are many other great colors for the wallcovering and fabric. Kelly Wearstler designed this one for F.Schumacher

I adore knowing the history of the trellis! Thank you Laura! I think it is such a fun and refreshing look that is feminine, yet not overly so at all. I love anything that gives the inside of a room a hint of feeling like one is out of doors. So fresh! Thank you for all of the beautiful photo examples.
