Steven Holl is one of my favorite architects and not always a household name like Frank Gehry.
When I was in design school (NYSID) I studied this private residence because I was eager to learn about Holl’s work and modern architecture. I grew up in an old Georgian style house and had studied mostly Beaux-Arts architecture. To follow the codes of Martha’s Vineyard Sound, the house is one story (when seen from the beach) and set back from the marshland. Holl took considerable thought to the way the light falls during the day in each room. Now that you know his name, you will be surprised at how frequently you read or hear his work mentioned. As a designer I look to other designers and architects that are outside of my style to learn from them. This ultimately challenges me and allows me to continue to grow. Take a look at his website (by clicking on his name above), he has completed many projects around the world.
THE BERKOWITZ-ODGIS HOUSE Martha’s Vineyard, MA, United States, 1984-1988
These architect’s lamps from Bobo Intriguing Objects make me think of this house.

I absolutely love the connection you made between the lamps and the house! It is amazying how similair they both are. This post has encouraged me to compare the angles and lines of a room and the objects in it. It’s so interesting and I certainly have a new idea to consider when decorating my apartment. Thanks Laura!
